PR’s and Piggie Backs

PR & PB.  That’s Piggie Back.  The sandwiches packed were PB&Honey.  We left the jelly at home.

“Mommie…..” my son yells as I run off, “where are you going?”  To run a race, my smile says back to him.  I have been hoping for 17:59 all year.  Maybe, by some luck of the angels, tonight is the night.  I pop a few gummi electrolyte things.  Those things are good!  Tonight’s flavor is strawberry.  Tastes like strawberry cola, remember that stuff?  I used to love to eat french fries and grape welches soda………..oh but I digress.

Race.  Warm up.  Huff and puff, stride and stuff.  Not feeling that great.  George told me once that sometimes when you don’t feel it, you get it.  Know what I mean?

Ricky is there.  Chitty-chat on the starting line ends with him telling me, “Just stick on me Drea.”  Like I haven’t been trying to do that!?!  “Yes, Ricky, I will try.”  We’re off.  I’m sticking.

1 mile.  2 mile.  I’m still with Ricky.  We enter the park and Ricky and me are not so sticky…..off he goes.  Not far.  2 mile mark said 11:33.  I want to look at my watch, but I’m nervous it will tell me bad news.  I hit the top of the hill.  I know it’s a minute to the finish with some give and take.  16:40.  I feel my whole body relax.  I know I have the 17’s.  Maybe I should not have glanced.  I couldn’t help it.  Finish line: 17:45.  PR!

My son greets me at the line, “You’re all wet!”  Thank you love.  We round up our sandwiches and head over for the kids run.  My son will run this sandy loop solo when I’m not in sight, but if I try to run with him…..well, it’s piggie backs all the way.  He runs the first two flags and then sure enough climbs aboard.  Trot, trot, trot, we round the last flag together and head for the ice cream line.  I scoop up my daughter and it’s cones all around.  What a wonderful night.  Chocolate, sandy, messy, and happy….we all got treats tonight!

I wanted 17:59……..I got 17:45……..now I want 17:44……….why?  WHY?
