Back in Black: SBAA Women Sweep Westmont XC Invitational
Westmont XC coach Russell Smiley warned his girls, “The older ladies are gonna be fast.” Wiley Smiley did not lie, the gals of age dominated the day. What fun it is to be young, but wait…what is this…the old birds can run? Sara summed up the day best when after the race she cheered, “Can we do prom next?”
A cool clear morning proved to be a late-summer’s tease as the morning air heated up around Westmont. Runner’s toed the chalk on the dirt track and squinted into the hot sun. The course, perfectly marked, perfectly challenging, and perfectly beautiful, was a treat. Today the SBAA Women’s Team was represented by Annie, Sara, Michelle, Kim, Christine, and myself. And what a representation! Annie took first, Sara second, myself third, Michelle fifth, Christine 20th, and Kim 39th. Annie, just four seconds shy of a course record, threw down in the last mile. Could I still see her? I cannot remember. What I did not miss was that the SBAA women’s team outright won the Westmont XC Invitational.
As we trotted our cool down, a young man from Fresno asked, “Wait, who are you guys?” Michelle shot him a big smile, “Oh the SBAA.” We united with our families, which included five kids five and under between Michelle and I, and snacked on brownies, danishes, bagels, strawberries, and oh…Annie…did bring bubbles for the OJ. What a wonderfully fun team event.
Who says you cannot do it all? Hmmmm maybe we should crash prom. Afterall, Kim was told “you could get a date in that top!”

[...] place ourselves to watch the women race. SBAA may have failed to muster a men’s team, but the women’s team is a total contrast. The first 3 runners are ours as is number 5. And that holds true for the [...]
